Background The clinical and dermoscopic changes of melanocytic nevi under the effects of photo‐epilation are poorly known. Objective Prospective study on clinical and dermatoscopic effects of photoe‐pilation on melanocytic nevi. Methods Eighteen patients exposed to photo‐epilation gave consent to a follow‐up programme from 2008 to 2017 at the Videodermatoscopic Office of the Dermatology Clinic of Cagliari (Italy), with clinical and dermoscopic assessment. Results A mean 2‐year follow‐up was recorded for 73 lesions. The most frequent clinical change was nevi colour, clearer than basal pictures, sometimes with increased pigmentation at the periphery, or residual islands of pigmentation, with vanishing borders. Acute burn with crusting was noted in few cases. Only one case showed progressive growth. Corresponding dermoscopic findings were bleaching of nevi, followed by pigment network disruption, appearance of white structureless areas and grey–blue globules. Complete regression occurred in 32.8% of the lesions. The growing nevus was characterized by peripheral globules. Excision for histopathological examination showed a compound nevus with mild atypia. Conclusions Although malignant modifications of nevi after photo‐epilation have not been described, the clinical and dermoscopic changes we observed suggest to extend the follow for more than 24 months, as the potential long‐term adverse effects of photo‐epilation on melanocytic nevi are unknown.

Background: Changes in the appearance of melanocytic nevi have been increasingly reported following hair removal lasers. This could be a source of anxiety in patients doing cosmetic hair removal lasers. Moreover, taking biopsy of any changed nevus following laser is not routinely practical. Therefore, this study was designed to describe dermoscopic changes happened on acquired junctional melanocytic nevi after photodepilation methods. Method:In this prospective study, 66 melanocytic nevi in 27 patients were chosen.Dermoscopic images were taken at the baseline visit and 2 months following single session of hair removal laser. Afterward, the before and after laser images were compared for any change in the structure and color of the nevi.Results: Dermoscopic images showed alterations in nevi following laser including changes in size in 33%, color in 63.6%, newly developed asymmetry in 12.1%, and regression in 3% of nevi. Besides, alteration in reticular and dots and globules pattern was found in 92.5% and 69.32%, respectively. Conclusions:Hair removal laser could induce considerable changes in appearance of acquired junctional melanocytic nevi. Dermoscopic study before and after the process could help to avoid unnecessary excision of suspected lesions.

Background Laser hair removal (LHR) is a common practice with increasing use worldwide. Clinical and dermoscopic changes in melanocytic nevi after LHR have been reported but prospective studies are lacking. Objective To describe dermoscopic changes of melanocytic nevi at different time points after LHR. Methods Prospective study in a cohort of female patients undergoing diode LHR. Dermoscopic follow‐up of at least three nevi on the legs that underwent hair removal. We included three nonexposed nevi on the arms as controls. Two blinded investigators analyzed dermoscopic images, according to variables selected based on the available literature. Results Thirty‐four patients were included with a total of 148 nevi on the legs and 112 nevi on the arms (controls). 47.9% (71/148) of the nevi on the legs had evidence of dermoscopic changes at the sixth hair removal session, compared to 9.8% (11/112) on controls (p < 0.001). The most frequent change was “bleaching” (41.9%, 62/148). Also, we observed “irregular hyperpigmented areas,” and “regression structures” in 5.4% (8/148) and 4.7% (7/148) of the cases at the sixth session, respectively. Neither of these structures were observed in the controls (p < 0.05). Limitations Only females were included; we did not perform histopathological evaluation nor reflectance confocal microscopy of changing nevi. Conclusion Melanocytic nevi frequently change after diode LHR. The changes cannot always distinguish between LHR induced and melanoma, so we advise avoiding nevi during laser therapies with melanin targets.
