Fomitiporia neotropica, a new species from South America evidenced by multilocus phylogenetic analyses

Abstract: During the revision of the Neotropical Fomitiporia species with resupinate basidiomata, several collections from southern Brazil, central Argentina, and French Guiana were found to represent an undescribed species, on the basis of molecular (DNA sequence) and additional morphological and distributional data. This taxon is described and illustrated as Fomitiporia neotropica sp. nov. The species belongs to the Fomitiporia langloisii lineage, the lineage type within Fomitiporia that so far contains only species w… Show more

“…Fomitiporia impercepta was recorded for the first time from Brazil, and F. calkinsii and F. langloisii from South America. Previously, there were 16 species of Fulvifomes known to occur in Brazil; however, our study adds three species so that the current number of species is 19 (Loguercio-Leite et al 2008;Baltazar and Gibertoni 2009;Coelho et al 2009;Westphalen and Silveira 2012;Campos-Santana et al 2014;Li el al. 2016;Alves-Silva et al 2020a, 2020b.…”

“…Remarks. Fomitiporia neotropica is similar to F. maxonii, differing mainly by the number of tube layers: in F. neotropica there are two layers, while in F. maxonii there are up to four (Decock et al 2007;Campos-Santana et al 2014). Distribution.…”

“…Previous studies, based on multilocus molecular data, have been performed to delimit the lineages/entities in the Hymenochaetaceae family [ 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 ]. Pildain et al [ 2 ] mentioned that the incorporation of more loci, as well as taxa, into phylogenetic analyses of the ‘phellinotus clade’ could help us to better understand the taxonomic inferences in this group.…”

“…Recently, several studies including new species and new records of polypores in Brazil have been published (Baltazar et al 2014;Baldoni et al 2015;Campos-Santana et al 2014;Motato-Vásquez et al 2014;2015a;b;Soares et al 2014b;Westphalen et al 2014;Pires et al 2015), but few included species of Junghuhnia (Westphalen et al 2010;2012). In the current study, we present descriptions of J. semisupiniformis and J. globospora and a key to the accepted species of Junghuhnia reported in Brazil.…”
