Food and drink waste from households in the UK

Abstract: Reducing the amount of food and drink that is wasted is a key element in developing a sustainable food system. In the UK, the largest contribution to food waste is from homes: 8.3 million tonnes per year, costing consumers £12 billion and contributing 3% of UK greenhouse gas emissions. This paper describes recent insights gained from research by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and others into the types of food wasted, why it is wasted and what can be done to minimise it. The research methods us… Show more

“…The measures undertaken to reduce these losses are not just for the sake of it but must be considered within a wider spectrum of action aimed at reducing the environmental impacts. Quested et al (2011) [35], in fact, highlighted how each ton of generic food product taken away from waste corresponds to 4.2 tons of CO 2 emissions saved. In particular, the materials used for the packaging can be increasingly sustainable and the introduction of intelligent and functional packaging may lead to further guarantees for the maintenance of the shelf-life of the fruit [36,37].…”

“…In this way, feelings of guilt can promote donations, because feeling guilty leads to a greater feeling of responsibility [83]. Wasting food is frequently associated with feelings of guilt and shame [84][85][86][87]. It will be interesting for future research to investigate the extent to which the feelings of guilt associated with food wastage impact the decisions of people from the food industry to donate their surplus food.…”

“…We further adjusted for unavoidable food losses (i.e. shell and bone) (14) , as well as avoidable food waste, both before and after food preparation (19,20) . LCA data of GHGE per kg of food product/group were then linked to all food items and dishes registered in the food records.…”
