FOOD AND FEEDING HABITS OF BAY AD FISH BAGRUS BAJAD (FORSSKAL, 1775) IN El-NOZHA HYDRODROME, ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

Abstract: I n order to elucidate the food and feeding habits of Bagrus bajed fish, stomach contents of 188 specimens with total body length ranging from 22 to 71cm were examined. Samples were collected monthly during the period from July 2000 to December 2001 from the commercial catch of El-Nozha Hydrodrome. The results of relative gut index indicated that B. bajed is carnivore. The range of its food material is wide, including cichiid species (Oreochromis niloticus, Oreochromis aureus, Sarotherodon galilaeus and Tilapi… Show more

“…Moreover, information on diet composition, relative gut length (RGL), fullness index (FI) and foraging intensity are helpful for fish farming [3,4,13,19], that are used to evaluate the variation of environmental factors [7]. The intraspecific variation of fish feeding habit is determined based on the change of RGL values [2,21], and the FI is used as a biological indicator to examine the foraging intensity of fish [8].…”

Dilator operculi (Figure 2.3) and the levator opercula Concerning feeding habits of the Nile catfishes M. electricus and B. bajad are piscivores (SAGUA, 1979;BAKHOUM and FATAS, 2003). C. gariepinus was omnivores, while S. schall feeding mainly on mollusks (BURGESS, 1989).…”
