Abstract:This chapter reviews current knowledge and experience with using food-based approaches in reducing vitamin A and iron deficiencies. It reviews recently published literature, highlights some lessons learned, and identifies knowledge gaps and research priorities. The main strategies reviewed are food-based interventions that aim at: (1) increasing the production, availability, and access to vitamin A and iron-rich foods through the promotion of home production and (2) plant breeding strategies that have the pote… Show more
“…This approach may in part be attributed to a lack of knowledge in earlier years of the interactions among nutrients in human physiology and metabolism. From various recommendations for high-protein diets [12] and later for high-carbohydrate diets [13,14], to more recent efforts directed at the elimination of micronutrient deficiencies [15], attention was generally concentrated on single-nutrient approaches. The introduction of crops focusing on single nutrients serves as an important means to address specific nutrients (macro-or micronutrients), but caution must be exercised, as any single crop, including a fruit or vegetable crop, does not address the complex nutritional needs of humans [5].…”

“…Underwood [30] cites lack of political commitment as partly responsible for the underutilization of available local food resources as a solution to an identifiable problem. However, Ruel and Levin [31] argue that the lack of direct scientific evidence for the effectiveness of dietary diversification strategies poses serious impediments to making a convincing case in support of large-scale implementation programs. Nevertheless, Kuhnlein [32] affirms that dietary diversification offers the best option for long-term sustainability of food resources in communities.…”
“…Nutrient supplementation and food-based approaches (Allen, 2003;Gopalan and Tamber, 2003;Ruel and Levin, 2002), as conventional strategies for addressing micronutrient malnutrition, Wt well with contemporary nutritional objectives. FortiWcation and dietary diversity are the primary components of food-based strategies for alleviating nutrient deWciencies.…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
