Food Insecurity in U.S. Households That Include Children With Disabilities

Logistic regression models were used to estimate the likelihood of food insecurity after adjusting for adult disability status, income, and other sociodemographic factors. Compared to other households with children, those including chi… Show more

“…From the included studies, 24 considered factors related to child FI and adjusted their analyses for potentially explanatory or confounding variables. 18,[20][21][22][23][24]26,27,35,37,38,40,42,[48][49][50][51]53,54,61,65,[70][71][72] The characteristics most frequently assessed were children's demographic characteristics (e.g. age, sex or ethnicity), parental factors [e.g.…”

“…In fact, on average, PWDs are two to six times less likely to be employed [ 38 ] and households with PWDs may experience a sharp decline in their household income, especially when income-earning household members, such as the heads of households and working-age adults, have disabilities [ 21 , 32 , 37 ]. Higher additional expenditures among PWD, including on medical care, adaptive equipment and assistive technology (e.g., wheelchairs, hearing aids, and prostheses), and other disability-related expenses, may represent another explanation [ 19 , 32 , 39 , 40 ]. Additional expenditures related to managing a disability may force households with PWDs to make trade-offs between basic needs (such as food) and disability-related expenses [ 32 , 39 ].…”

Additional expenditures related to managing a disability may force households with PWDs to make trade-offs between basic needs (such as food) and disability-related expenses [ 32 , 39 ]. In addition, several other reasons, such as various barriers (e.g., transportation) to accessing food supplies or PWD’s coping strategies for food hardship, may partially explain the unique effect of disability on food insecurity [ 32 ].…”

“…Effects should be greater in Medicaid versus Medicare, because Medicaid recipients have greater exposure to SNAP benefits (13). Effects of SNAP should also be magnified for people with disabilities, who have elevated exposure to food insecurity and elevated SNAP and health care usage (17,18). …”
