Food‐Originating ACE Inhibitors, Including Antihypertensive Peptides, as Preventive Food Components in Blood Pressure Reduction

Abstract: This work is a literature overview on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory/antihypertensive peptides in food protein sources. The following aspects related to peptides with the above-mentioned bioactivity are discussed: (i) mechanism of action of ACE, (ii) the structural character of ACE inhibitors/antihypertensive peptide sequences determined by different methods, including quantitative structure-activity relationship studies, (iii) their food sources, (iv) absorption of peptides, (v) in vitro and i… Show more

“…Ninety-nine (99) peptides had an estimated IC 50 less than 50 μM (34.9% of 284 peptides), 100 peptides had an estimated IC 50 between 50 and 100 μM (35.2% of 284 peptides), and 37 peptides had an estimated IC 50 less than 500 μM, accounting for 13.0%. Most reported ACE inhibitory peptides with IC 50 less than 100 μM showed potent in vivo anti-hypertensive activity [39]. Therefore, P. esculenta is a prospective anti-hypertensive peptide-containing resource since more than two thirds di-and tri-peptides theoretically possess obvious ACE inhibitory activity.…”

“…Informacje dotyczące wpływu struktury i sekwencji aminokwasowej na aktywność peptydów inhibitorów ACE zostały przedstawione i przedyskutowane w pracy przeglądowej autorstwa Iwaniak i wsp. [32].

“…Most phenolic acids in cereals are found in a bound form as conjugate with sugars, fatty acids or proteins [3]. Also, bioactive peptides (Table 1) with antihypertensive activity have been obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis from proteins of maize grains [5].…”
