Food Preference and Survival Rates of Allodontermes tenax (Isoptera: Termitidea)

Abstract: The main goal of this research was to determine food preference and survival rates of Allodontermes tenax. Traditionally, A.tenax has been induced to swarm during the dry season. In order to determine the best substrate for mass production, it was necessary to find a suitable food substance that enhanced the survival of the termites in the laboratory and hence can be applied in situ. The study was carried out in Trans-Nzoia at an altitude of 1,900 meters, with a latitude of 1°1'8.72"N, and a longitude of 35°0'… Show more

“…In addition, termites can be easily harvested, and some are available year‐round, making them an economically viable option for food production. Moreover, the seminatural rearing system of edible termites has been developed to ensure the sustainable production of the insects (Dao et al., 2022; Jacob et al., 2022).…”

“…Previous studies have been developed to determine low‐cost techniques for mass rearing of edible termites (Dao et al., 2022; Farina et al., 1991; Jacob et al., 2022; Ngee et al., 2004). There are several factors to optimize the rearing system of termites, such as modifying the input (e.g., termite diet and container types) and conditioning the optimal environment, as seen in Table 4.…”
