a b s t r a c tProjecting risks posed to aviation safety by wildlife populations is often overlooked in airport land-use planning. However, the growing dependency on civil aviation for global commerce can require increases in capacity at airports which affect land use, wildlife populations, and perspectives on aviation safety. Our objectives were to (1) review legislation that affects airports and surrounding communities relative to managing and reducing wildlife hazards to aviation; (2) identify information gaps and future research needs relative to regulated land uses on and near airports, and the effects on wildlife populations; and (3) demonstrate how information regarding wildlife responses to land-use practices can be incorporated into wildlife-strike risk assessments. We show that guidelines for land-use practices on and near airports with regard to wildlife hazards to aviation can be vague, conflicting, and scientifically ill-supported. We discuss research needs with regard to management of stormwater runoff; wildlife use of agricultural crops and tillage regimens relative to revenue and safety; the role of an airport in the landscape matrix with regard to its effects on wildlife species richness and abundance; and spatial and temporal requirements of wildlife species that use airports, relative to implementing current and novel management techniques. We also encourage the development and maintenance of datasets that will allow realistic assessment of wildlife-strike risk relative to current airport conditions and anticipated changes to capacity. Land uses at airports influence wildlife populations, and understanding and incorporating these effects into planning will reduce risks posed to both aviation safety and wildlife species.Published by Elsevier B.V.

Water temperatures were constant across the interface through much of the year. By mid-summer, hypoxic conditions prevailed within the water column in the cattail stand. Algae levels were similar across the interface throughout much of the year, with peaks occurring just inside the interface in June and July. Early in the season, there was a trend for higher nektonic invertebrate numbers within the cattail stands of both bays. By late August, there were similar total invertebrate numbers across the interface. Cladocera and ostracod numbers were higher within the cattail stands during June and July; during the same periods, corixid levels were higher in the open water sites. The low oxygen levels within the cattail stands during the summer may reduce predation by fish and other predators that cannot tolerate low oxygen levels. This may explain the higher numbers of prey species like cladocerans and ostracods within the cattail stands during mid-summer. The presence of algal or detrital food resources seemed to have little influence on invertebrate abundance across the interface during this study. Peaks in invertebrate abundance did not occur at the emergent vegetation-open water interface during any of the sampling periods in this study. The high invertebrate diversity and abundance in interspersed wetland habitat may be related more to the mixture of habitat types rather than the amount of interface present.

(Poaceae), has been a crop in Asia and Europe for 10 000 years and for over 300 years in Canada, where it is grown for grain, rescue crops, birdseed, forage, and recently for swath grazing. Crop-like biotypes have escaped from cultivation throughout Canada, but these infestations were generally temporary. Probably the first persistent, weedy biotype in Canada (Quebec) has large, dormant, dark red seeds. Its eradication has been attempted for many years. In the 1970s, a worse problem, a black-seeded biotype with many weedy attributes, including shattering as seeds ripen and strongly dormant seeds distasteful to many birds, spread across southern Ontario and became labelled as noxious. Concurrently, it was described as the worst weed in the US Corn Belt. In the 1980s, Canadian studies revealed infestations of other weedy biotypes, differing in seed colour and other attributes. Panicum miliaceum is an extremely variable species world-wide. Since the late 1990s, weedy proso millet has declined dramatically after the adoption of newer herbicides, particularly glyphosate. This development may lead to increases in cultivated proso millet, especially where climate change favours short-season crops grown under drier conditions. (poacées), depuis 10 000 ans en Asie et en Europe et depuis plus de trois siècles au Canada pour ses graines, comme provende de secours, pour nourrir les oiseaux, pour son fourrage et, plus récemment, pour la paissance en andain. Des biotypes domestiqués sont redevenus sauvages un peu partout au Canada, mais les infestations restent le plus souvent temporaires. Le premier biotype envahissant persistant du Canada a probablement été observé au Québec. Il se caractérise par de grosses semences rouges dormantes. On s'est efforcé de l'éradiquer pendant de nombreuses années. Dans les années 1970, un biotype à graines noires, possédant de nombreuses caractéristiques d'une mauvaise herbe (notamment l'égrenage prématuré quand les semences parviennent à maturité et des graines à dormance prolongée que peu d'oiseaux aiment), a soulevé un problème plus épineux en se répandant dans le sud de l'Ontario. Ce biotype a été qualifié de nuisible avant de devenir la pire adventice dans la ceinture du maïs des États-Unis. Dans les années 1980, des études canadiennes ont révélé l'existence de peuplements d'autres biotypes envahissants, aux semences de couleur différente et présentant d'autres caractères.
