Foot-Mounted Inertial Measurement Units-Based Device for Ankle Rehabilitation

Abstract: Ankle sprains are frequent injuries that occur among people of all ages. Ankle sprains constitute approximately 15% of all sports injuries, and are the most common traumatic emergencies. Without proper treatment and rehabilitation, a more severe sprain can weaken the ankle, making it more likely for new injures, and leading to long-term problems. In this work, we present an inertial measurement units (IMU)-based physical interface for measuring the foot attitude, and a graphical user interface that acts as a v… Show more

“…A tri-axis magnetometer can be added to form a hybrid IMU, sometimes referred to as a Magnetic, Angular Rate, and Gravity (MARG) sensor [26], to reduce the orientation accumulated error. Information from an IMU system is widely employed in the domain of rehabilitation [27]. Additionally, for dynamic sEMG-based gesture recognition, orientation information from IMU devices can be leveraged to obtain higher performances than with EMG alone [20,28,29].…”

“…Data fusion algorithms, such as Kalman or Complimentary filters, are typically utilized to estimate 3D orientations, based on the combined signals obtained from the accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer [14]. Navigation errors, which may occur during high acceleration movements and magnetic disturbance, should be accounted for [14,18]. Commercially available IMUs incorporate approaches such as a rotation matrix or Euler angle to quantify the captured kinematics in a global fixed frame [19].…”

“…A través de la historia los sensores inerciales gracias a su fiabilidad (15,42) y a su poca desviación estándar al momento de arrojar los resultados, trascendieron del mundo de la ingeniería para ser empleados en otras áreas (43) . En el campo de la fisioterapia y afines, su papel radicó en la interpretación y cuantificación del movimiento corporal humano (21) para ser analizados por medio de diferentes protocolos, donde se utilizan puntos anatómicos específicos para su colocación y posterior ejecución del movimiento (16,44) .…”
