Forage production and quality of serradella in mild winter areas in north‐west Spain

Abstract: Forage production potential and nutritive value of pink serradella (Ornithopus sativus) from New Zealand and from the Atlantic coastal areas of Galicia (north-west Spain, southwest Europe) were compared. The experiments were conducted in the high rainfall and mild winter areas of Galicia, where this minor legume has traditionally been grown on neutral to acidic sandy soils for hay and for green fodder production. The average forage dry matter (DM) yields ranged from 4.2 to 4.3 t DM ha -1 in April and 5.6 to 6

Performance of this species with moisture deficit has received little attention to date, bar the mentioning of the absence of symptoms to water stress (Wickham et al 2007).…”

“…Serradella (Ornithopus spp.) are high-quality pasture legumes used in Europe (particularly the Mediterranean basin), South America, southern Africa, New Zealand and, increasingly, southern Australian temperate grazing systems (Bolland & Gladstones, 1987;Dodd & Orr, 1995;Franczuk et al, 2010;Iglesias & Lloveras, 2000;del Pozo & Ovalle, 2009;Ribeiro et al, 2019;Schofield, 1950;Williams et al, 1975). They were identified as useful pasture species for Australia in the early 1950s and have undergone extensive breeding to improve agronomic characteristics since the 1970s (Nichols et al, 2007).…”
