Integrated analysis that involves physical sedimentological, standard palynological and electrofacies analyses on ditch cuttings and suite of wireline logs from Gaibu–1 Well, southern Bornu were examined to identify critical sequence elements and construct a bio-sequence stratigraphical framework. Four (4) palynozones consisting of Triorites africaensis, Cretacaeiporites scabratus - Odontochitina costata, Droseridites senonicus and Syncolporites/Milfordia spp Assemblage Zones construed to be Late Cretaceous – younger successions. Nine (9) depositional sequences each with candidate maximum flooding surfaces (375, 900, 1875, 2250, 2600, 3050, 3400, 3800, 4300 m) marked by marker shales with high abundance and diversity of palynomorphs. Thus, equate with the local lithostratigraphy and global large-scale depositional cycles with candidate sequence boundaries (50, 725, 1625, 2175, 2490, 2850, 3300, 3610, 3960, 4470 m) ranging about 96.28 to 70.07 Ma. The delineated transgressive surfaces along the built sequences mark the subjected onset of marine flooding characterised with interchange of progradational to retrogradational facies. Delineated sequence elements generally show up-hole from progradational to retrogradational and aggradational that represents Lowstand Systems Tracts (LSTs), Transgressive Systems Tracts (TSTs) and Highstand Systems Tracts (HSTs) respectively. The LSTs are seen in form of prograding complex and slope fans, suggestive of good reservoirs. The TSTs consist of channel sand units and shales that depict retrogradational marine units, which could serve as both seals and source rocks for the sand units. The HSTs are made up of interplay of aggradational to progradational sediment packages that could serve as a potential source rock. The palaeoenvironmental indices depict the successions are deposited within continental to open marine settings.

This paper investigates the hydrocarbon generation potential of the shale beds penetrated by Kinasar-1 well in the SE depression of the Bornu Basin, Nigeria. The objective of the study was to select shale sample from the ditch cuttings of the well and assess their source rock status based on the integration of four routinely used indicators: TOC, HI, Tmax, and VR. While all the strata analysed contain sufficient organic matter (TOC > 0.5) for hydrocarbon generation, the HI/T max plot suggests slightly matured to matured type II/III kerogen that is capable of generating only gas as revealed by the HI/TOC plot. Of tectonic significance is the Vitrinite reflectance result, which suggests cooling, based on observed VR reversal at depth. This is interpreted herein as marking a period of uplift and erosion that is totally different from and occurred before the intra-Maastrichtian unconformity that affected all the basins of WACRS.

A three-dimensional model of the Logone Birni Basin (LBB) is presented by combining gravity and magnetic data and constrained by broad seismic profiles. The 3-D model has revealed the distribution of the stratigraphic formations as well as the top basement variation. Detailed structure of different stratigraphic sequences is presented for the first time for this basin and some of the sequences correlate with established sequences of the neighboring basins. The sediments pill consists of six sedimentary units dating from the Neocomian to the Quartenary. The Makary subbasin or Northern Logone Birni Basin (NLBB) is the deepest part of the basin and may hold good prospect for hydrocarbon generation and accumulation. However, the limited presence of faults and intrusive bodies decreases the possibility of thermal degeneration, contrary to the Central Logone Birni Basin (CLBB) where conditions seem to be fulfilled for possible hydrocarbon generation and maturity. The complexity of the structural pattern of the model is further enhanced by the presences of volcanic bodies, some of which lay directly on basement or interbedded with the sediments layers mainly in the CLBB.
