Foraminiferal paleodiversity and paleoenvironments at the NE coastal plain of Buenos Aires province (Argentina) during the Mid-Holocene sea level highstand

Abstract: In this investigation, we carried out a Mid-Holocene paleoenvironmental reconstruction based on fossilized benthic foraminifera, retrieved from sedimentary deposits located in Bahía Samborombón coastal plain. A total of 38 species, grouped into 19 genera, were identified. The assemblage, constituted mainly by Buccella peruviana (d’Orbigny), Cribroelphidium poeyanum (d’Orbigny), Ammonia parkinsoniana (d’Orbigny) and Ammonia tepida (Cushman), indicate predominantly abnormal marine conditions, characterized by lo… Show more

“…Nevertheless, several studies have been carried out on the Argentinean coast, to unravel the coastal evolution of the Río de la Plata estuary located between Argentina and Uruguay, that has linked this coastal evolution with sea-level changes associated to global climatic conditions since the early Holocene (Cavallotto and Violante, 2005). Therefore, it is an area of interest for geomorphological, environmental and palaeoenvironmental studies (Ballesteros-Prada et al, 2021;Braga et al, 2014;Carol et al, 2008Carol et al, , 2015Fucks et al, 2005;Laprida and Bertels-Psotka, 2003;Mourelle et al, 2015;Pereyra et al, 2021;Perez et al, 2012;Samus et al, 2020;Vilanova and Prieto, 2012). Samborombón bay, located in the external sector of the Argentine estuary coast (Figure 1), is a coastal wetland that integrates several protected areas.…”
