“…Hence, we base our approach on an understanding of MNC activity as a practice of networking and transfer of knowledge (Fløysand, Njøs, Nilsen, & Nygaard, 2016;Nilsen, 2016Nilsen, , 2017. Consequently, in developing our approach, we argue that there is a need to incorporate relational understandings (e.g., in conceptualizations of cluster renewal.…”

“…Based on the GPN framework, the article shows how firm and extra-firm actors shape their assets to develop the FWP network. We identify the network actors and their network development practices, as well as the strategies and associated discourses through which host states strive to maximize the national and regional benefits of foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in emerging renewable energy sectors (Fløysand et al 2016). We argue that the distinct materiality of FWP technology shapes the territorial configuration of the production network by enabling its spatial extension across a range of locations.…”

“…Case studies of rural manufacturing (Virkalla, 2007), electro industry (Jakobsen et al, 2005), and ICT and software industries (Isaksen and Trippl, 2016) have documented how new trajectories have been opened by the introduction of new industries. The work on FDIs and regional renewal from Fløysand et al (2016) demonstrate that foreign investments create new paths in regions, but that the evolvement of these paths depends on the industry-region coupling and the support from institutional structures at the national level. While the literature on FDI has proved important insights into the field of MNCs and ''outside-in'' transplantation, the current model of path-dependent regional industrial development needs to be explored further in providing a theoretical framework for approaching new paths in rural and noncore areas.…”
