During the last two decades, partial discharges (PDs) modelling methods have been used as a complement of insulation diagnosis systems of electrical assets. Finite‐element‐analysis models for simulating PDs in cavities within solid dielectric materials are reviewed and a novel model is presented, which combines the main advantages of electrostatic and electric current models. The theoretical background is presented and some limitations and restrictions are discussed. A case of study was implemented for three different ageing conditions and simulation results exhibit good agreement with reported values by other authors in the literature. An analysis of variations of PD behaviour with ageing as a function of temperature and pressure is briefly presented. It is concluded that more research is needed to include physical and chemical interactions on the void surface and that the cavity surface conductivity plays a fundamental role in the PD simulations at advanced ageing conditions.

For many decades transformer oil has served as a well-known insulating medium. Its electrical properties, among others, have been studied in length. In recent years, with the increasing concern for the environment, alternative insulating liquids have been proposed. In the context of this concise review, such alternative fluids are investigated. Some conflicting evidence regarding experimental results that still persist are discussed and aspects of vegetable oils in need of further work are pointed out.

Partial discharge (PD) in cavities can lead to a breakdown in solid insulation and, therefore, indicate the onset of aging in electrical equipment. It is necessary to investigate the activity of single- and double-cavity PD under aging conditions, which is the focus of this study. The results obtained can be useful in monitoring the condition of insulation systems. The factors (pressure, effective work function, and charge decay time constant) that influence PD behaviour under different test conditions were permutated in a PD model. The simulation results agree with measurements obtained for the same applied voltage. The model can generate PD pulse distribution shapes similar to the measured PD of single and double cavities. Both turtle-like and rabbit-ear-like phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns were observed during the aging process of the samples in both double and single cavities. This study concludes that the identification of the PD pattern achieved in this work for closely coupled cavities is a step towards characterizing multiple defects phenomena through PD evolution patterns.
