Foreign language learning as a complex dynamic process: A microgenetic case study of a Chinese child's English learning trajectory

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe current study focuses on one child's (male, 3 years old) learning behaviors in an English as a Foreign Language classroom, and explores the coordination and developmental patterns of his nonverbal (gestures and body language) and verbal (verbal repetition and verbal responses) learning behaviors over time. Guided by the principles of the theory of Complex Dynamical Systems, the child's learning behaviors were analyzed over the course of four months, using (Cross) Recurrence Quantification An… Show more

“…In addition, foreign language learning is a complex dynamic process [128]. Therefore, bilingual studies with a (short or long-term) longitudinal design [78], taking individual differences more into account [78], are needed in order to tap the dynamics of L2 learning.…”

“…First, although the findings provide valuable implications for educational practice and policy, we need to interpret the results of this cross-sectional study cautiously, as the findings are correlational. Future studies might consider following a group of children longitudinally, given the dynamic nature of children’s language development in their early childhood (Sun et al, 2016b). Experiments are preferred to examine the significant output variables identified in this study.…”

“…Language learning strategies are believed to have a significant role in learners' language learning (Sun, Steinkrauss, Van Der Steen, Cox & De Bot, 2016;Cohen, 2011;Oxford, 2015). As such, it is significant for language educators to scaffold learners in using effective language learning strategies to address their language learning needs (Das Santos, 2017).…”
