Forest Cover Mapping in Iskandar Malaysia Using Satellite Data

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Malaysia is the third largest country in the world that had lost forest cover. Therefore, timely information on forest cover is required to help the government to ensure that the remaining forest resources are managed in a sustainable manner. This study aims to map and detect changes of forest cover (deforestation and disturbance) in Iskandar Malaysia region in the south of Peninsular Malaysia between years 1990 and 2010 using Landsat satellite images. “…Landsat data was also used by Giree et al (2013) for identifying forest cover and gross forest cover loss in Peninsular Malaysia between 1990 and 2000 and a loss of 0.64 Mha year -1 was reported. In another study, Kanniah et al (2016) successfully mapped forest cover changes in a fast developing economic region (Iskandar Malaysia) in the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia using an automated forest cover detection program called CLASlite using Landsat data. Forest cover changes from 1990 to 2010 were detected with only 14 per cent (1990) and 5 per cent (2010) error when the results were compared to the forest land use map produced by DOA.…”
