Foreword to the Special Issue “Theorytellings: Epistemic Narratives in the Digital Humanities”

Abstract

This special issue deals with existing theory narratives and conceptions in DH scholarship. Introducing the neologism “theorytellings”, this special issue invites DH scholars to narrate and discuss their own theoretical contributions to the field.

“…Reading at scale does not preclude a close-reading encounter with a text, and computational literary scholars continue to bring with them interpretative, theory-driven approaches to literary analysis (Kleymann et al, 2022). Furthermore, the rhetoric of "big data" and "vastness of scale" is not reflective of much of the work carried out within computational literary studies, where many literary scholars have adopted a computational approach that moves between proximity and distance, putting quantitative, digital methods to work alongside qualitative, interpretative modes of literary analysis, and identifying productive synergies between the two (Piper, 2015).…”
