Forgiveness of Others and Self?Forgiveness: The Predictive Role of Cognitive Distortions, Empathy and Rumination

Abstract: In 2017 and 2018, engineering applications and design process were given weight to with the updates carried out in the Physical Sciences Lesson Curriculum in Turkey. For the STEM education which is at the center of this update to reach its target, it is highly important that students accurately learn what engineers do, what their work field is, the characteristics they should carry and understand the nature of engineering. The present study aims to identify the perception of engineers of 5th, 6th and 7th grade… Show more

“…Based on Beck’s (1976) Cognitive Theory, it can be said that individuals who believe that something is true just because they feel that way, have very strict rules about how they should behave, evaluate the events they have experienced in an all or nothing algorithm and ignore their own achievements, have a negative opinion about themselves by making extreme generalizations from a single data, attach general labels to themselves and evaluate all situations according to these labels and attribute negative experiences to themselves when there is no causal relationship between external events and themselves can have greater difficulties in forgiving themselves. In fact, when the studies in the literature are examined, parallel to the findings of the current study, it is seen that there is a negative correlation between cognitive distortions and self-forgiveness (Aşçıoğlu-Önal & Yalçın, 2017; Kılıç & Tunç, 2020) and those cognitive distortions are a negative and significant predictor of emerging adults’ self-forgiveness (Moriatis, 2018).…”

“…Based on Beck’s (1976) Cognitive Theory, it can be said that individuals who are absolutely sure that they know the thoughts going through other people’s minds and that other people know or should know what is going on in their own minds, who attach general labels to other people and evaluate these people and establish their relationships with these people on the basis of these labels rather than making a more accurate evaluations reflecting the truth, who make over-generalizations based on a limited number of sample cases, who adopt a negative attitude about someone just because they feel that way by ignore the evidence indicating the opposite, who have strict rules about how others should behave and evaluate their relationships with others as black or white can have difficulties in forgiving others. When the studies in the literature are examined, it is seen that, parallel to the findings of the current study, there is a negative relationship between cognitive distortions and forgiveness of others (Aşçıoğlu-Önal & Yalçın, 2017; Bahari et al, 2010) and that cognitive distortions have a significant negative effect of emerging adults’ forgiving others (Aşçıoğlu-Önal & Yalçın, 2017; Moriatis, 2018).…”

“…Forgiveness refers to the process of the voluntary waiving of resentment, hatred, and blame towards others so that not only the person forgets the hostility and hatred but also wishes the best for the transgressor [ 75 ]. This forgiveness requires a deliberate act of giving up anger and resentment toward the offender while also not requiring a response from the offender [ 76 , 77 ]. The offenders, in this case, are the mothers in the communities, and the women succeeded in seeing them as not having a choice in a pressurised community.…”

“…Conversely, individuals with an unforgiving disposition tend to be more susceptible to stress. Thus, forgiveness can be considered a useful coping strategy for managing negative emotions (Onal & Yalcin, 2017). Forgiveness of both others and of oneself can have positive effects on physical and mental well‐being by reducing feelings of depression, stress, shame, and ultimately increasing life satisfaction and subjective well‐being.…”
