Formation of monolithic silica gel microhoneycombs (SMHs) using pseudosteady state growth of microstructural ice crystals

Abstract: Monolithic silica gel microhoneycombs, which have an array of straight macropores within their structure and developed micro/mesopores inside their walls, were prepared using pseudosteady state growth of ice crystals which occurs during the unidirectional freeze-gelation of freshly gelled aqueous silica hydrogels, followed by a pore-protecting drying method, freeze drying.

“…The RGO-I monolith has a local unidirectional structure and the colonies of locally aligned region are observed, which is in the parallel directions of the ice front. This structure is similar to the previously reported materials which prepared by ice freezing method [16][17][18]. However, no ordered structure can be observed in the region within the colonies.…”

“…The GO monoliths were produced with unidirectional freeze drying method used for production of other materials [16][17][18][19][20]. The obtained monoliths were heated up to 573 K at a rate of 1.5 K min -1 and then the reduced GO (RGO) monoliths were obtained.…”

“…By widening the range of application, gels in forms other than polygonal fibers can be expected. Based on this concept, the " ice templating"method was developed [19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. This paper will first describe the outline of this new method and next, the details about methods to c o n t r o l μ m s c a l e d i me n s i o n s ( f i b e r d i a me t e r a n d mi c r o h o n e y c o mb c h a n n e l s i z e ) a n d n m s c a l e d i me n s i o n s (micropore and mesopore size) of the materials obtained through it.…”

“…Many approaches have been developed to obtain ceramic materials with a hierarchical porosity 1 , such as extrusion 2 or ice templating 3 . They typically involve the presence of a macro-or mesopore former that is removed by a heat treatment.…”
