Formative Assessment Pre-Test to Identify College Students’ Prior Knowledge, Misconceptions and Learning Difficulties in Biology

Abstract: A formative assessment pretest was administered to undergraduate students at the beginning of a science course in order to find out their prior knowledge, misconceptions and learning difficulties on the topic of the human respiratory system and energy issues. Those findings could provide their instructors with the valuable information required in order to adapt their teaching methods to the students_ needs. The test included open-ended questions and was administered on the first day of the course. The data obta… Show more

“…These factors can be modelled as potential covariates, enabling investigation of the impact of prior experience on Risk Aware performance. This strategy aligns with Lazarowitz and Lieb's () and Hailikari et al's () recommendation to assess students' prior knowledge before commencing training. Data elucidating the nature of students' work and training background can then be utilised to refine Risk Aware's pedagogical approaches.…”

“…Interviewee perceptions of prior knowledge of Risk Aware content were thus a surprising qualitative finding. As actual knowledge can differ from perceived knowledge (Lazarowitz & Lieb, ), students may have overestimated their pre‐existing knowledge. This is consistent with Hailikari, Katajavuori, and Lincdblom‐Ylanne's () observation that declarative prior knowledge (basic awareness of clinical risks), is associated with inferior test performance compared to procedural prior knowledge (integrated understanding of risk).…”

“…Karmaşık sistemlere ait yapılar arası bağların kurulamaması, bu sistemlerin öğrenilmesinde önemli bir sınırlılık teşkil etmektedir (Hmelo-Silver, Marathe & Liu, 2007). Çünkü biyolojik bilgi farklı alanlara ait bilgi birikimi de gerektirmektedir (Lazarowitz & Lieb, 2006). Zvi-Assaraf, Dodick ve Tripto (2013) vücut sistemlerinin hiyerarşik yapısının anlaşılmasında istenilen başarının sağlanamadığını tespit etmişlerdir.…”

“…There are many options for collecting student data that can be used to inform contingent teaching and/or as formative assessments if shared with students, but each comes with a downside in the variety of teaching situations in which librarians find themselves. For example, pre-tests are a good way to discern student knowledge and tailor instruction prior to class (Kelly, 2019;Lazarowitz & Lieb, 2006) but pretests are not always an option due to time constraints or faculty buy-in. If a librarian is not in a computer classroom, they can use a low-tech option, such as one-minute papers.…”
