Objective: The aim of this study was to formulate an oral thin film strip (OTFS) contained the red dragon fruit peel (RDFP) ethanol extract (Hylocereus polyrhizus) and evaluate the characteristic, stability and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). Methods: The film was made using the solvent casting method by adding a variety of concentration ethanol extract of red dragon fruit peel (5%, 10%, and 15%). The films were evaluated in organoleptic test, weight, thickness, pH, disintegration time, folding endurance, stability test and antibacterial activity. Results: The results showed that the film provided a distinctive color, aroma, and taste of the extract. The result of film evaluation had weight between 0.07-0.21 g, thickness between 0.10-0.20 mm, pH between 5.70-5.99, disintegration time between 34.99-49.13 s, and folding endurance between 321.00-812.83 times. The films were stable for 2 mo at a variety storage temperature (4±2 ℃, 28±2 ℃, and 40±2 ℃). The films showed antibacterial activity for 5%, 10% and 15% with the diameter of inhibition 8.5 mm, 10.8 mm, and 12.9 mm, respectively. Conclusion: Ethanol extract of RDFP can be utilized as a mouth freshener film that is stable for 2 mo and has antibacterial activity against S. mutans.

The fast dissolving orally disintegrating film are the designed to dissolve upon contact with wet surface or fluids like saliva, within a few seconds. Like a tablet, capsule, oral liquids there is no need of additional liquids like water. This is the most convenient dosage form for patients and also provides marketing advantages. In pediatric, geriatric and patient who have fear of choking orally disintegrating film is most convenient and popular dosage form. As the drug I directly absorb in blood through mucus membrane in mouth the degradation of drug in GIT and the first pass metabolism of drug is avoided which increase the arability of drug in plasma which increases therapeutic effect.This review gives information about all aspects from today’s point of view and gives idea about evaluation, formulation, manufacturing process of fast dissolving orally disintegrating film.

The present research work aim was to formulate a fast-dissolving sublingual film containing Aripiprazole, which is used in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Fast Dissolving Sublingual Film Containing Aripiprazole prepared by using the solvent casting method. Aripiprazole is a BCS IV drug with poor solubility and poor permeability causing poor systemic absorption. Fast dissolving sublingual film prepared by using Design-Expert® version13 software with 32 full factorial designs in which Film-forming polymer HPMC K4M and plasticizers like PEG 400, and PVA are used in different concentrations. The formulated batches was evaluated for mechanical properties, surface pH, folding endurance, drug content, swelling property, SEM analysis, and in vitro % drug release. The characterization of the film shows satisfactory results following mechanical properties of a film like weight variation and thickness. The formulation (F4, F12) containing the highest concentration of plasticizer shows a high folding endurance ranges from 90-100%. FTIR and DCS studies reveal that there are no interactions means drugs and excipients are compatible with each other. Formulation F4 is optimized batch passes evaluation parameters and maximum % drug release i.e. 98.79 % ±0.36 within 1.5 min. Therefore, the sublingual film is an effective approach for BCS IV and III class drugs by avoiding first-pass metabolism with rapid onset of action and better patient compliance in psychotic disorders.
