Formulation and Evaluation of Polymeric Nanoparticles of an Antiviral Drug for Gastroretention

Abstract: The aim of present study was to formulate and evaluate nanoparticles of acyclovir by using different hydrophilic polymers. Acyclovir was selected as a suitable drug for gastro-retentive nanoparticles due to its short half life, low bioavailability, high frequency of administration, and narrow absorption window in stomach and upper part of GIT. The nano-precipitation method was used to prepare nanoparticles so as to avoid both chlorinated solvents and surfactants to prevent their toxic effect on the body. Nanop… Show more

“…According to the research conducted by Kharia et al . the zeta-potential value more than ǀ30 mV rendered the system more stable because the repulsive force between particles prevented aggregation ( 27 ). The SK32-UA10 formula indicated a zeta-potential value less than -30 mV (-41.99 mV) leading to the conclusion that the niosomes were stable because there was considerable electrostatic stabilization ( 24 ).…”

“…A particle with a size higher than 100 nm is proven to enter the cells through endocytosis or pinocytosis [30]. Furthermore, the pI values of the complex that fall in the range between 0.01 to 0.7 showed that this particle behaved as a monodispersed system, while the higher value of pI than 0.7 would indicate larger particle size distribution in the solution [31]. Another physiochemical character observed was zeta potential that shows the charged of the complex.…”
