Forward Selection Procedure for Linear Model Building Using Spearman’s Rank Correlation

Abstract: Forward selection (FS) is a step-by-step model-building algorithm for linear regression. The FS algorithm was expressed in terms of sample correlations where Pearson's product-moment correlation was used. The FS yields poor results when the data contain contaminations. In this article, we propose the use of Spearman's rank correlation in FS. The proposed method is called FSr. We conduct an extensive simulation study to compare the performance of FSr with FS. The proposed FSr performs better than the FS algorit… Show more

“…From Bangabandhu's own words we came to know that Bangamata inspired him to write his memoirs (Rahman, 2012). Hossain Shaheed Suhrawardy, Sher-e-Bangla A.K Fazlul Haque, and Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani did not write about their lives and struggles, so the nation lacks a detailed and accurate history.…”

“…Genetic algorithms, as well as classical methods such as stepwise regression, fall in the last category, that of wrapper methods , which consist in selecting a subset of features based on their ability to predict well. Through the years, a number of different methods have been proposed, either in methodological papers like Rahman & Khan (2012) or through applications such as Onan (2015) and Onan & Korukoğlu (2017).…”

“…Our strategy is to use the BE model to sequence the candidate predictors to form a list, with the best predictors at the top. BE has been described using sample correlations and proposed a robust version of BE (RBE) that is based on two approaches to robust bivariate correlation estimates: adjusted winsorized correlation and Spearman rank correlation 11,12,13 . These two types of correlations are robust only to bivariate outliers.…”
