Fossil horses from the Late Pleistocene of Tapalqué Creek (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina)

Abstract: A comparative study was made with the known record of equids species in South America, identifying the remains as Equus neogeus, Hippidion devillei, and Hippidion principale. These data increase the record of Equidae in South America and provide new evidence about the chronological and geographical distribution. The sedimentary deposits of the Lujan Formation outcropping at Tapalqué creek (4 to 120 ky) were accumulated through fluvial processes. This Formation comprises a rich vertebrate fauna corresponding t… Show more

“…The Stages/Ages scheme has been mainly used for the Late Miocene-Holocene segment and, especially, for southern South America. Up to date, the two systems (LMAs and Stages/Ages) coexisted in the literature, and, consequently, the South American mammal scale is a "hybrid" containing units based on different concepts (e.g., Croft, 2016;Cione et al, 2015;Prado et al, 2019). Under this confused scenario, some authors have recently opted to use the Stages/Ages of the International Chronostratigraphic Chart defined by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) (e.g., Esteban et al, 2014;Bonini & Brandoni, 2015;Armella & Bonini, 2020;Bonini et al, 2021;Brandoni & González-Ruiz, 2021).…”

“…Recientemente se hallaron a la altura del puente sobre la Av. Avellaneda, en el centro de la ciudad, restos de Equus neogeous, los cuales junto con los de Hippidion devillei e Hippidion principale encontrados en el Salto de Piedra, a 8 km aguas arriba, demuestran la presencia de équidos extintos en la zona (Prado et al 2019).…”
