“…Adaptation can be seen as an interactive and iterative process, as recently proposed by Brands, Wade, Stapert, and van Heugten (2012), reflecting a balance between restoration of function or assimilation, for example, via compensation (e.g., Cicerone et al, 2011;Wilson, 2000), and adjusting to loss-dependent changes, e.g., by accommodation. Rehabilitation therefore should consider both assimilation and accommodation in a dynamic interplay (Brands et al, 2012;Conrad, Doering, Rief, & Exner, 2010a;Conrad et al, 2010b) which is, for example, realised in holistic rehabilitation programmes (e.g., BenYishay & Daniels-Zide, 2000;Hofer, Holtforth, Frischknecht, & Znoj, 2010).
