Fostering Adjustment to Acquired Brain Injury by Psychotherapeutic Interventions: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: This preliminary study investigates the effectiveness of a treatment program in which neuropsychological interventions are supplemented by psychotherapeutic interventions to foster the adjustment process. Eleven patients who had an adjustment disorder following an acquired brain injury were recruited for the treatment group. Measures were assessed at the beginning and end using the Structured Clinical Interview, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Goal Attainment Scaling procedure, and the Trier Coping Scales. … Show more

“…Problem-solving characterized another class of behavioral intervention that has the potential to improve mood, in addition to other rehabilitation-relevant outcomes such as goal attainment and executive function 27,114. Setting and attaining goals are critical components of the rehabilitation process and may be compromised by executive impairment after TBI 139141. If goal attainment after TBI is compromised, it may further contribute to the discrepancy between the appraisal of one’s pre- and post-injury abilities, leading to depression.…”

“…Adaptation can be seen as an interactive and iterative process, as recently proposed by Brands, Wade, Stapert, and van Heugten (2012), reflecting a balance between restoration of function or assimilation, for example, via compensation (e.g., Cicerone et al, 2011;Wilson, 2000), and adjusting to loss-dependent changes, e.g., by accommodation. Rehabilitation therefore should consider both assimilation and accommodation in a dynamic interplay (Brands et al, 2012;Conrad, Doering, Rief, & Exner, 2010a;Conrad et al, 2010b) which is, for example, realised in holistic rehabilitation programmes (e.g., BenYishay & Daniels-Zide, 2000;Hofer, Holtforth, Frischknecht, & Znoj, 2010). Goal attainment scaling procedures might help to detect important individual life goals (Malec, 1999;McGrath & Adams, 1999;Turner-Stokes, Williams, & Johnson, 2009).…”

“…Two observational studies that used pre–post designs investigated psychodynamic psychotherapy in individuals with adjustment disorder (Hofer, Holtforth, Frischknecht, & Znoj, ; Kramer, Despland, Michel, Drapeau, & De Roten, ). A naturalistic study of 32 French students with adjustment disorder by Kramer et al.…”
