Fostering clinical reasoning in physiotherapy: comparing the effects of concept map study and concept map completion after example study in novice and advanced learners

Abstract: BackgroundHealth profession learners can foster clinical reasoning by studying worked examples presenting fully worked out solutions to a clinical problem. It is possible to improve the learning effect of these worked examples by combining them with other learning activities based on concept maps. This study investigated which combinaison of activities, worked examples study with concept map completion or worked examples study with concept map study, fosters more meaningful learning of intervention knowledge i… Show more

“…Despite the different formats they may take, these interventions share the basic idea of providing students with guidance to compare and contrast different alternative diagnoses for the problem at hand. One example is concept mapping, which has been employed in various formats (Montpetit-Tourangeau et al 2017;Torre et al 2019) to foster students' clinical reasoning. One of the most investigated of this type of interventions is deliberate reflection, which presents students with clinical cases that look similar but have different diagnoses (e.g.…”

“…The better performance of high-school students compared to those of elementary school may be associated with a greater prior knowledge about health and biology topics, as well as with other previously developed learning skills, allowing for assimilation of higher levels of instructional guidance [30][31][32][33]. In addition, the subjective perception that superior scores among females are associated with greater commitment, attention, motivation and interest during the interventions is supported by previously published studies.…”
