Fostering Research with Societal Impact in Higher Education Institutions: A Review and Conceptualization

Abstract: There is an increasing pressure on Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to produce societally relevant and impactful research, and to actively engage with non-academic stakeholders who are looking for answers to their challenges. This is a special challenge for social sciences, such as business, management, entrepreneurship, as opposed to natural sciences that rely largely on quantifiable data and statistics. The present chapter addresses this challenge and introduces the dimensions of societal impact of resea… Show more

“…However, these studies have relied primarily on qualitative research, and there is a need for empirical data through quantitative analysis to test the reliability of the concept. Păunescu (2013) noted the limitations of the social innovation index, which only examines the policy and institutional framework, financing, entrepreneurship, and society as key factors influencing social innovation in companies. This research was limited to 45 countries-G20 and OECD nations, with a focus on only 19 countries and the European Union (EU).…”

“…Source: Author's own creation IJSHE 24,8 agendas are focused on sustainability and what priority they give to sustainability research orientation. This is somewhat surprising given the increasing importance that social impact and similar categories have on the institutional environment of HEIs (Paunescu et al, 2022;Sutton, 2020). On a positive note, schools more often report on interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches in research, which are necessary modes of conducting research on sustainability (Bergmann et al, 2012).…”
