“…Children's informal interactions with close relationship partners during early childhood provide rich learning opportunities to build foundational social and personal agency skills towards the development of self‐determination, such as decision making, problem solving, and goal seeking via the conflict process (i.e., power and influence) (Deci & Ryan, ; Erwin et al., ; Parke & Buriel, ). Furthermore, examining siblings’ behaviors in polyadic conflict reveals the complexity of children's development in the context of the family system (Minuchin, ).…”

For all young children to participate in routines, environmental considerations include a variety of easy-to-reach, child-sized materials and environmental layouts that are safe with room to explore.…”

“…The Foundations Intervention was designed to promote adult sharing of information between home and school to benefit young children experiencing delays or differences. Using a conceptual model (Palmer et al, 2013) the research team refined the Foundations Intervention over a series of trials in preschool settings (Erwin et al, 2016) to provide a framework for parents and teachers to engage in collaborative partnerships while sharing knowledge and skills for child needs. Within our conceptual model, it was hypothesized that 1) an accessible environment and 2) intentional adult cues help facilitate measurable elements of foundations of self-determination including a) child engagement, b) child selfregulation, and c) child choice and problem solving.…”
