As the offshore engineering moving from shallow to deep waters, the foundation types for fixed and floating platforms have been gradually evolving to minimize engineering costs and structural risks in the harsh offshore environments. Particular focus of this paper is on the foundation instability and its failure mechanisms as well as the relevant theory advances for the prevailing foundation types in both shallow and deep water depths. Piles, spudcans, gravity bases, suction caissons, and plate anchors are detailed in this paper. The failure phenomena and mechanisms for each type of foundations are identified and summarized, respectively. The theoretical approaches along with sophisticated empirical solutions for the bearing capacity problems are then presented. The major challenges are from flow-structure-soil coupling processes, rigorous constitutive modeling of cyclic behaviors of marine sediments, and the spatial variability of soil properties for large-spreading structures. Further researches are suggested to reveal the instability mechanisms for underpinning the evolution of offshore foundations. Citation:Gao F P, Li J H, Qi W G, et al. The spherical ball penetrometer is increasingly being used for profiling the undrained shear strength of soils in centrifuge and offshore site investigations. This paper reports the results from largedeformation finite-element (LDFE) analysis undertaken to provide insight into ball penetrometer behaviour during undrained vertical penetration through uniform and stratified clay deposits. The LDFE analyses simulated continuous penetration of ball penetrometers from the seabed surface. The results were validated against centrifuge test data and plasticity solutions prior to undertaking a detailed parametric study, exploring a range of normalised soil properties and layer thicknesses and roughnesses of the soil/ball interface. The influence of the shaft (or area ratio) was also identified. The evolving soil failure patterns in single-and double-layer soils revealed two interesting aspects: soil backflow above the penetrometer, and trapping of the stronger material beneath the penetrometer. A framework has been proposed to account for these effects, which will allow accurate interpretation of soil undrained shear strength from the ball penetration resistance.

A B S T R A C TSpudcan foundations are often pushed into a spatially varying non-homogeneous seabed to provide bearing capacity for a mobile jack-up platform. The natural variability of soil properties coupled with the complexity of loading conditions make determining the bearing capacity of spudcan foundations a challenging problem. A random finite element method is established to investigate the bearing capacity of a spudcan foundation embedded in a spatially varying clayey seabed when subjected to vertical, horizontal and moment loadings. A criterion is proposed for determining the characteristic value of the shear strength for the random seabed. Results indicate that the spatial variability in the clayey seabed significantly reduces the bearing capacity of a spudcan foundation. This reduction is more significant in the vertical bearing capacity than in the horizontal and moment bearing capacities. The mean bearing capacity is smaller for the clay with larger coefficient of variation of undrained shear strength. A characteristic value of mean minus a standard deviation of the undrained shear strength is capable to ensure the probability of failure is not greater than 5%. This study provide an evaluation method for the spatial variability effect of a clayey seabed, paving the way for a costeffective design of spudcan foundations.
