Four facets of Facebook intensity — The development of the Multidimensional Facebook Intensity Scale

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to create a short and valid questionnaire: the Multidimensional Facebook Intensity Scale (MFIS). In Study 1 (N = 512), we used exploratory structural equation modeling to explore the basic dimensions of everyday Facebook use. The results suggested four factors: persistence, boredom, overuse, and self-expression. The MFIS also had good reliability in terms of internal consistency and temporal stability. In Study 2 (N = 566), confirmatory factor analysis was conducted in order to… Show more

“…Therefore, new research results show that there is substantial overlap (communality) between REA and passion, especially OP (Szabo 2018). Similar findings were reported in non-sports contexts, too, such as in the field of screen-based online behaviors (Orosz et al 2016;Tóth-Király et al 2019b), gambling (MacKillop et al 2006, and work (Birkeland and Buch 2015).…”

“…For the analyzed sample, internal consistency was high (Cronbach's α = 0.82). To measure the intensity of Instagram usage, the 13-item Facebook Intensity Scale [54] was adopted. This scale is used to measure Facebook usage beyond simple measures of frequency and duration, incorporating emotional connectedness to the site and its integration into individuals' daily activities; it can separate problematic and non-problematic aspects of Facebook use [55].…”

“…Hypothesized Facebook outcomes were assessed with The Multidimensional Facebook Intensity Scale (Orosz, Tóth-Király, & Bőthe, 2015). In the present study, we only used three relevant subscales: Facebook Persistence (4 Passion on the Screen 13 items, e.g., "I feel bad if I don't check my Facebook daily"; α = .75), Facebook Self-Expression (3 items, e.g., "I like refining my Facebook profile"; α = .70), and Facebook Overuse (3 items; e.g., "It happens that I use Facebook instead of sleeping"; α = .75).…”
