“…Basic interventions comprising attention towards one cause and/or one biochemical mechanism (e.g., targeting a single neurotransmitter disturbance) makes the goal of remission or recovery less likely. This was highlighted in a recent study where giving simple written recommendations about lifestyle changes for sleep hygiene, physical activity, diet, and sunlight exposure enhanced outcomes to standard antidepressant treatment (Garcia-Toro et al, 2012). Remission/response rates reached 60% in the combined treatment group compared with only 10% in the anti-depressant only group.…”

Four specific lifestyle recommendations consisting of dietary modification, exercise, sunlight exposure and sleep patterns were prescribed in the active group, while the control group was given instruction to perform a pattern of eating, sleeping, exercise and exposure to light which they considered might make them feel better.…”

Only one study used written recommendations only and did not report on the qualifications of the individual who developed the guidelines (15) . (☺) Improvement in the anxiety score on the HADS in the intervention groups; mean value fell from 12 (SD 1·8) to 8·3 (SD 2·7) in G3 (a 30 % improvement, P < 0·001) and from 12·34 (SD 1·67) to 9·92 (SD 3·4) in G2 (a 19 % improvement, P < 0·001).…”

“…The magnitude of effect, among the positive studies reporting the requisite data, ranged from 0·19 to 2·02 (Cohen's d) (13,(15)(16)(17)25) . The remaining nine studies reported no intervention effects.…”
