Four mating-type genes control sexual differentiation in the fission yeast.

Abstract: The mating‐type region of fission yeast consists of three components, mat1, mat2‐P and mat3‐M, each separated by 15 kb. Cell‐type is determined by the alternate allele present at mat1, either P in an h+ or M in an h‐ cell. mat2‐P and mat3‐M serve as donors of information that is transposed to mat1 during a switch of mating type. We have determined the nucleotide sequence of each component of mat. The P and M specific regions are 1104 and 1128 bp, respectively, and bounded by sequences common to each mating‐typ… Show more

“…We therefore studied the roles of mating-type genes, in particular mat1-M, in the process of matingtype switching. Of the two genes in the mat1-M cassette, Mi is induced specifically during meiotic induction (10). However, Mc is expressed during vegetative growth (10) and might have a role in the directionality of switching.…”

“…The mat1-M/mat1:3-M cells are unable to undergo meiosis and sporulation as both alleles contain M-information, but the mat1-P/mat1-M heterozygous constitution is essential for inducing sporulation (Kelly et al 1988). However, once mat1-M switch had generated the mat1-P allele, the cell with the resulting mat1-P/mat1:3-M constitution becomes competent to undergo sporulation under nutritional starvation conditions.…”

“…In h + cells, two different genes are expressed from the mat1 locus: mat1-Pc, which controls the sexual differentiation, and mat1-Pm, which controls the initiation of meiosis. Similarly, h -cells express mat1-Mc, which also controls the sexual differentiation, and mat1-Mm, needed to enter meiosis (Kelly et al, 1988).…”
