Abstract: New records are provided for four species of caridean shrimp (Alpheidae and Palaemonidae) from Sonora, Sinaloa, and Oaxaca, along the west coast of Mexico. Alpheus tenuis Kim & Abele, 1988 extends its northern range to Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. Alpheus martini Kim & Abele, 1988 is recorded for the first time outside of Panama (Alcatraz Island, Sonora). During a faunistic survey of the islands and islets of Bahía Chamela, Jalisco, Mexico, 40 species of caridean shrimps belonging to 5 families were collected; the Alpheidae with 3 genera and 20 species was the best represented, followed by the Palaemonidae with 10 genera and 12 species. Other families found were: Hippolytidae (3 genera, 5 species), Gnathophyllidae (1 genus, 1 species), and Processidae (1 genus, 2 species). Compared with the rest of the Mexican Pacific, the number of species found represents 44% of the genera and 45% of the benthic species of caridean shrimps reported to date. Ninety percent of the species collected correspond to new records for Bahía Chamela. Two species, Neopontonides henrivronprahli from Costa Rica and Colombia, and Thor cocoensis from Costa Rica and the Galápagos Islands, are recorded for the first time since their original description, extending their distribution range by ca 16 and 14 degrees of latitude to the north, respectively. Many caridean shrimps live in symbiosis with bivalves, the shrimps finding refuge and food in the mucus in their host’s mantle cavity. We report for the first time the presence of Pontonia margarita Verrill, 1869 on both coasts of Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, as a symbiont of the pen shell Pinna rugosa Sowerby, 1835. The symbiont was found in Laguna Ojo de Liebre (LOL), which faces the Pacific Ocean, and in Bahía Concepción (BC), on the eastern coast facing the Gulf of California. A total of 569 specimens of Pinna rugosa were studied, 472 from LOL (104–277 mm shell length (SL)) and 97 from BC (130–234 mm SL). A total of 376 Pontonia margarita individuals were extracted in LOL (19–41 mm total length (TL)) and 41 in BC (20–48 mm TL). The prevalence of Pontonia margarita was 46% in LOL and 28% in BC. The regression analyses for both sexes of Pontonia margarita showed a high correlation between TL and total weight and abdominal length and TL. The data showed a moderate correlation between TL and the length of the major and minor chelae, and TL and length of the minor chela. There was no significant relationship between biometric parameters of the host and the symbiont. The presence of gravid females of Pontonia margarita (52% in LOL and 39% in BC) in shells suggests reproduction during autumn.

Richness and large-scale distribution of marine benthic caridean shrimps (Decapoda: Caridea) from the Eastern Tropical Pacific

Based on an updated checklist of the benthic caridean shrimp fauna of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP), we analyzed their large-scale species richness distribution patterns using a grid approximation. Caridean fauna is composed of 183 species belonging to 67 genera and 18 families. Alpheidae, Palaemonidae and Thoridae contributed largely to species richness. Alpheus and Synalpheus were the most diverse genera. Most species (24%) have a narrow distribution inhabiting a single grid, and as many as 135 are restricted to < 5 grids. Mexico has the largest richness (130) besides Ecuador (98) and Panama (75). Richness among grids varies largely; overall, it is larger around Galapagos and Panama, Colombia, Costa Rica and the Gulf of California. There was a meaningful correlation between a proxy of sampling intensity and richness, suggesting that along with habitat heterogeneity or large-scale evolutionary processes currently invoked as richness drivers, the pattern can also be related to differences in research efforts. Exponential fitting and Chao2 index suggest that the caridean faunal inventory from the ETP is still far from being complete. Overall, the results call for a more thoughtful and systematic sampling scheme in order to get information from poorly sampled environments and areas in the ETP.
