Four new species of Begonia (Begoniaceae) from Vietnam: B. abbreviata, B. calciphila, B. sphenantheroides and B. tamdaoensis

Abstract: Four new species of Begonia, namely B. abbreviata C.-I Peng, B. calciphila C.-I Peng, B. sphenantheroides C.-I Peng and B. tamdaoensis C.-I Peng are documented from northern Vietnam. Detailed descriptions, line drawings, color plates, chromosome data, foliar SEM observations and comparisons with phenetically similar species are provided to aid in identification.

“…Previously, the lower chromosome numbers of Begonia (i.e.,2n=14,16,18,and 20) were all known from sect. Platycentrum, with karyotypes reported from B. wui-senioris (2n=14; Peng et al 2014c) and B. tamdaoensis (2n=18;Peng et al 2015c). Our current study of sect.…”

“…In Asian Begonia, karyotypes have only been reported in four sections, i.e., sect. Baryandra (Kono et al 2021), Coelocentrum (Kono et al 2020), Diploclinium (Oginuma and Peng 2002), and Platycentrum (Oginuma and Peng 2002, Peng et al 2014c, 2015c. In sect.…”

“…After review of the type specimens and taxonomic publications within the regions (Gagnepain 1921; Irmscher 1939; Ho 1991; Nguyen 2004; Shui and Chen 2005; Truong et al 2005; Nguyen and Tebbit 2006; Kiew 2007; Nguyen et al 2010; Peng et al 2014, 2015a,b; Hughes et al 2015), seven new species of Begonia have been confirmed, and their sectional positions designated here (Doorenbos et al 1998; Shui et al 2002). Due to the taxonomic complexity of the genus (Thomas et al 2011; Chung et al 2014), the DNA samples of the above new species have also been collected and some possible different opinions will be issued about their systematic position in the broad context in the future.…”

“…It is also similar as B. calciphila C.-I Peng in the shape and trichomes of leaves, but differs in 0.5–1.2 cm long stout inter-nodes ( vs. 1.5–4.5 cm long slender inter-nodes) and hairy flowers and fruits ( vs. glabrous in the latter species) (Peng et al 2015b). In Bac Kan Province, Vietnam, there are four new species already described, viz.…”

“…1c), with the highest diversity in Guangxi (Gu et al 2007; Chung et al 2014). In the past two decades, explorations and taxonomic studies in the region have greatly expanded the number of species in the section from 15 (Ku 1999) to 78 (Chung et al 2014; Peng et al 2014, 2015a, b; Li et al 2016; Qin et al 2017b; Chen et al 2018). As a great portion of SVLK remains unexplored, it is fully expected that further exploration will undoubtedly uncover more novelties (Chen et al 2018).…”
