“…These bands consist of two branches and do not belong to any known transitions of VO. A rotational analysis of these bands indicated that the bands at 21 050 and 22 042 cm À1 had a common upper state but the lower state constants for these two bands matched with the rotational constants of the v 00 = 1 and v 00 = 0 vibrational levels of the 1 2 D 3/2 state, while the band at 21 979 cm À1 had a lower Table 1 Observed line positions (in cm À1 ) for the new transition of VO [20,21]. This observation led us to conclude that the 21 050 and 22 042 cm À1 bands were in fact the 0-1 and 0-0 bands of the 2 D 3/2 -1 2 D 3/2 sub-band of a new electronic transition, and the 21 979 cm À1 band was the 0-0 band of the corresponding 2 D 5/2 -1 2 D 5/2 sub-band.…”

“…Among the doublet transitions of VO, there are two 2 P-2 D transitions near 7200 and 8126 cm À1 having a common 2 D lower state which will be referred in this paper as the 1 2 D state. Recently another near infrared transition, 2 U-1 2 D, has been identified near 5500 cm À1 having its lower state in common with the two doublet-doublet transitions mentioned above [21]. There is a fourth doublet transition, which has been assigned as 2 2 D-1 2 U, that does not have any state in common with the other doublet transitions [20].…”

“…However, these observed transitions do not quite provide sufficient information to determine the energy of all spin rovibronic bands relative to the zero of the X 4 Σ − state. Specifically, there is a spectroscopic network connecting the {c 2 ∆ 5/2 , e 2 Φ 7/2 , f 2 Π 3/2 and g 2 Π 3/2 } states from the experiments reported by Merer et al (1987), Ram et al (2002) and Ram & Bernath (2005) via the observed g 2 Π 3/2 -X 4 Σ − transition. This network can be connected to the ground state of VO.…”

“…Because of their importance in many fields, from materials science to interstellar chemistry, 3d transition metal monoxides have been the subject of many experimental [1][2][3] and theoretical studies [4][5][6]. While the database for ground and excited electronic states is expanding it remains far from complete.…”
