Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging analysis of dental pulp inflammatory diseases

Abstract: Objectives Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy let characterize the macromolecular composition and distribution of tissues and cells, by studying the interaction between infrared radiation and matter. Therefore, we hypothesize to exploit this analytical tool in the analysis of inflamed pulps, to detect the different biochemical features related to various degrees of inflammation. Materials and Methods IR maps of 13 irreversible and 12 hyperplastic pulpitis, together with 10 normal pulps, were acquired… Show more

“…Peaks at ∼1460 and ∼1400 cm −1 are generally due to the bending modes of CH 2/3 groups present both in amino acid side chains and in fatty acids [39]. In the 1300-900 cm −1 spectral region, the absorptions resulting from carbohydrates as well as phosphates can be detected; in particular, the asymmetric and symmetric phosphodiester vibrations of nucleic acids are found at ∼1241 cm −1 and ∼1085 cm −1 [28]. The generic C-OH vibrational mode of carbohydrates is found at ∼1050 cm −1 , while glycogen one falls at ∼1030 cm −1 [29].…”

“…The separation forces exerted by orthodontic pliers can lead to the development of fracture lines and/or enamel fissures, particularly when ceramic brackets debond [13][14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Furthermore, the reduction in fibrotic cicatricial function is expressed by inhibiting fibroblasts and myoblasts (type I and III collagen) of the oral mucosa [ 52 ]. Furthermore, curcumin associated with capsaicin induces apoptosis, has photosensitizing properties in the presence of oxygen and sunshine, and therefore can be used in photodynamic therapy, especially in precancerous oral diseases [ 53 , 54 , 55 ].…”
