Social wasps can face many challenges during their colony cycle, including the presence of parasites. The order Strepsiptera is among the main parasites of the wasp genus Polistes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an endoparasite species on the host Polistes ferreri, with the hypothesis that females of this social wasp would undergo morphophysiological alterations as well as changes in their cuticular chemical profile caused by the obligate endoparasite. On average, parasitism was found in 10% of the colonies studied. All the parasitized females showed filamentous ovarioles without developing oocytes, which indicates a physiological castration. Moreover, the endoparasites present in the gaster of females caused its volume to increase, and the presence of endoparasites changed the cuticular chemical profiles of females, confirming our hypothesis. It is likely that this parasitism effect could hamper the maintenance of wasp colonies.

In this study, we evaluated the possibility of obtaining successive Astyanax altiparanae spawns under laboratory conditions. In order to do so, 104 specimens were randomly distributed into four boxes (10 females and 16 males each) and kept in a recirculation system at an average temperature of 29.24 ± 0.42 °C, under natural photoperiod, for 30 days. On the onset of the experiment, males and females were induced for reproduction with a 6 mg kg-1 carp pituitary extract dose. After that, ovary (for gonadosomatic index and stereological assessment) and blood samples (for steroid evaluation) were collected from eight females (two per box) at the following moments: immediately after hormonal induction (day 0) and on days 1, 6, 16 and 30 after spawning. On day 6, spawned females presented complete mature ovaries similar to those on day 0 and, in this period, we did not observe postovulatory complexes, indicating that their resorption happened very fast. Concomitantly, the steroid levels increased gradually up to day 6, which corroborated an intense vitellogenic activity in this period. This study has demonstrated that A. altiparanae females are suitable for induced spawning within six days after spawning, when kept at 29.24 ± 0.42 °C, in a system maintained with recirculated water.

Pharmaceutically active compounds (PAC) are micropollutants that represent emerging contaminants (ECs) commonly found in aquatic environments. Exposure of aquatic biota to these identified ECs has resulted in severe effects. In the last few years, the number of studies on PAC has grown quickly owing to increasing awareness of the potential environmental and health risks related to these micropollutants. The aim of our study was to evaluate the contamination levels of selected PAC and their potential ecological threat to forested streams. Samples of stream water were collected in the second largest city in Mato Grosso do Sul State in center-west of Brazil. Physicochemical parameters and concentrations of PAC were quantified in samples collected in six field campaigns. Ecological risk assessment (ERA) based on risk quotient (RQ) was carried out based on the maximum measured concentration of PAC in water. Six pharmaceutical compounds were successfully quantified in the forested streams, namely caffeine (1.0 – 1,696.04 ng/L), naproxen (0.9 – 681.80 ng/L), diclofenac (0.8 – 849.94 ng/L), estriol (0.9 – 13.22 ng/L), estradiol (0.9 – 587.30 ng/L) and ethinylestradiol (0.9 – 790.90 ng/L). From an ecological risk perspective, ethinylestradiol, estradiol, diclofenac and caffeine can be considered as priority PAC because they showed moderate to high risks to aquatic organisms and may further lead to damages along the food chain. This study provides valuable information to reinforce the importance of continuous monitoring of the forested streams in center-west region of the country, as well as efforts to control the entry of these micropollutants in watercourse.
