Fourier Transform Spectroscopy of the B2Σ-X2Σ Transition of BaH

Abstract: The B 2Σ-X 2Σ band system of gaseous barium hydride in the wave length region 8900-11200 Å has been examined in absorption using a King furnace. The spectrum has been obtained by means of Fourier transform spectroscopy. Seven bands have been rotationally analyzed. Term values and molecular constants of the B 2Σ and X 2Σ states have been determined by standard least-squares analysis. The following molecular constants have been derived (cm-1… Show more

“…The state-by-state fits of the line positions revealed anomalies [2,3]. For example, all the levels in the 2A state show considerable A-doubling; in v = 0 of A' 2A5/2 in BaH, AVef goes through a maximum at J = 14 89 and it proves to be impossible to fit the corresponding f-parity levels by the usual polynomials [2].…”

“…Equations (8,9) provide two independent experimental methods to estimate the vibrational branching ratio R 01 = q 01 (ω 01 /ω 00 ) 3 , and thus the vibronic FranckCondon factor q 01 , which is a prerequisite for direct laser cooling.…”

“…Figure 1 shows the electronic, rovibrational, and spin structure important for molecular laser cooling. Since 1932, studies have been performed on the BaH electronic ground state, X 2 Σ + , and seven excited electronic states [5][6][7][8][9][10]. The two lowest excited electronic states, A 2 Π and B 2 Σ + , lie in the near infrared spectral region, and both can be accessed by commercially available diode lasers.…”

“…Subsequently Appelblad et al [15] [16] performed detailed analysis for the v = 0 levels and interpreted the H2A, A2II and B22 as members of a d-complex, correlated to the 5d atomic state of barium. This interpretation confirms the assignment suggested by Veseth [13].…”
