Fourth supplementary list of British minerals

Abstract: Hexagonal (Ln, CaH)Cu6(AsO4)a(OH)6.3H20 Pale-green fibres, resembling aurichalcite and giving the powder-pattern of mixite (q.v.), on mimetite in quartz on old specimens in the BM(NH), at Wheal Alfred, Phillack, Cornwall. “…The sample MB2404 is erionite from Bog Hill Quarry, Northern Ireland, where it occurs in amygdales in various rhyolitic and basaltic lavas [42]. Due to the lack of chemical and structural data on erionite from this locality, a preliminary characterization was performed by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD, Bruker AXS, Karlsruhe, Germany) and SEM-EDS (Zeiss, Jena, Germany).…”

“…RECENT lists of British minerals by Livingstone and Macpherson (1983), Bevins (1988) and Ryback et al (1988) have added significantly to the original work of Greg and Lettsom (1858) and subsequent updates by Spencer (1898Spencer ( , 1931Spencer ( , 1958 and Embrey (1978). This note reports on the discovery of six manganese oxide minerals previously unrecorded in Britain, summarizes the difficulties involved in the accurate identification of this group of minerals and, in this context, discusses the reliability of the early identifications.…”

“…Spencer (1898) added braunite and hausmannite although, according to , both minerals require confirmation. Hubnerite, jacobsite and pyrophanite were added by Spencer (1958), and Embrey (1978) included birnessite, coronodite, cryptomelane and lithiophorite in his list. Manganite, pyrolusite and romanechite were all identified by Chew (t978), confirming the occurrence of these minerals.…”

“…The infrared spectrum of these laths indicates that they are the rare zinc phosphate spencerite, Zna(PO4)2(OH)2"3H20. Spencerite has only been reported before from two localities, Hudson's Bay mine, Salmo, British Columbia, the type locality (Walker, 1916(Walker, , 1918, and Turf Pits mine, Grassington, Yorkshire (British Museum (Natural History) specimen, collected by A. W. G. Kingsbury in 1963; see Embrey, 1978 . Spectra of spencerite and scholzite from Kabwe, off RSWB 83-9 and 83-6 respectively were measured under similar conditions (but using KBr plates) over the 4000-400 cm-t range using a Perkin Elmer 397 spectrophotometer, and gave similar spectra over that range to those shown.…”
