FPGA based connected component labeling

Abstract: Connected component labeling is very useful for separating object and background, and counting objects. The sequential processing architecture proposed by Von Neumann has limits in real-time processing when large data is treated. In this study, a connected component labeling system using parallel hardware architecture is implemented. This system is able to calculate over 200 frames per second (fps) and is labeled a maximum of 255 components. This is a stand-alone system that can receive input image data from a… Show more

“…At the regional level, there are certain indicators that can aid in the examination of extreme events. The connected components labelling technique, which involves identifying regions in an image, proves valuable for segregating and enumerating objects (Falcao et al, 2004; Lee et al, 2007). Consequently, this method enables the identification of the most heavily impacted area by an extreme event and facilitates the assessment of its long‐term trend.…”

“…The image object, which is the component, is separated from the background image on binary image. Then each component is labeled and displayed as output images (Lee et al, 2007). Points belonging to a surface project to spatially closed points.…”

“…Improvement on the accuracy and labeling speed has been reported in various researches (Lee et al, 2007;Falcao et al, 2005;Sossa and Guzman, 2000;Yang and Zhang, 2003;Rosenfeld and Pfaltz, 1966). For instance, Di Stefano and Bulgarelli (1999) and Jonas et al (1997) proposed a comparatively more efficient and much simpler algorithm, that shows an improvement in the efficiency of the labeling process.…”
