Fractal Nature of Porosity in Volcanic Tight Reservoirs of the Santanghu Basin and Its Relationship to Pore Formation Processes

Abstract: In this paper, in a case study of Santanghu Basin in China, the morphological characteristics and size distribution of nanoscale pores in the volcanic rocks of the Haerjiawu Formation were investigated using the results of low temperature nitrogen adsorption experiments. This research showed that within the target layer, a large number of nanoscale, eroded pores showed an "ink bottle" morphology with narrow pore mouths and wide bodies. The fractal dimension of pores increases gradually with increasing depth. M… Show more

“…The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm of the coal samples is depicted in Fig- ure 3c. According to the curve morphology, the coal samples consist of a typical mesoporous material that matches the Type IV isotherm and the Type H3 hysteresis ring [20] of the IUPAC's categorization of porous solids. Monomolecular layer adsorption occurred in the micropores in the low relative pressure interval (P/P0 < 0.15).…”

“…To compare the fractal characteristics between marine and continental shales, Liu et al 11 also characterized the reservoir properties and fractal dimensions of 18 shale samples. Weiming Wang et al 12 studied the morphological characteristics and size distribution of nanoscale pores in the volcanic rocks of the Haerjiawu Formation using the results of low temperature nitrogen adsorption experiments and fractal geometry theory. Considering the relationship between the porosity of rocks and the fractal characteristics of pore structures, Lin et al 13 proposed a new improved image segmentation method, which used the calculated porosity of core images as a constraint to obtain the best threshold.…”

“…The Santanghu Basin is an important petroleum-bearing basin in Northwest China. According to the current exploration and development results, several oil-bearing formations and various reservoir types have been developed in the basin, tight volcanic oil reservoir (TVOR) is one of them. In 2006, the Tuha Oilfield discovered the TVOR in the Carboniferous Karagang Formation in the Malang Sag of the Santanghu Basin through drilling . Since then, the Tuha Oilfield has adopted various measures to increase the production of TVOR.…”
