Fracture Behavior of Permeable Asphalt Mixtures with Steel Slag under Low Temperature Based on Acoustic Emission Technique

Abstract: Acoustic emission (AE), as a nondestructive testing (NDT) and real-time monitoring technique, could characterize the damage evolution and fracture behavior of materials. The primary objective of this paper was to investigate the improvement mechanism of steel slag on the low-temperature fracture behavior of permeable asphalt mixtures (PAM). Firstly, steel slag coarse aggregates were used to replace basalt coarse aggregates with equal volume at different levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). Then, the low-tempe… Show more

“…Tensile modes are corresponding to high energy, high amplitude, and have a short rise time and duration time, leading to lower RA and higher AF value. Conversely, shear modes show low frequency and longer rise time and duration time, resulting in higher RA and lower AF value [ 30 ].…”

“…The rapid fracture stage of OAC was further evenly divided into seven stages, while BFAC was eight stages. According to [ 30 ], the slope of boundary line was selected as 0.5 based on the minimum dissimilarity of clustering principle, thus, the boundary line was set as AF/RA = 0.5. The RA and AF distribution at different stages of OAC and BFAC were shown in Figure 12 and Figure 13 .…”

“…In addition to enhancing the deformation resistance of SSAM, steel slag aggregates can improve the anti-fatigue cracking performance of asphalt mixtures (Qazizadeh et al, 2018;Ziaee and Behnia, 2020), as well as their low-temperature performance (Chai et al, 2020). The improvement mechanism is governed by the alkalinity and a large specific surface area of steel slag (Zhu et al, 2020) and benefits from the physical anchoring and chemical adhesion effects between steel slag and asphalt (Pathak et al, 2020).…”

“…Recently, the characteristics of moisture damage of asphalt mixtures have attracted researchers' attention. AE technology was used to monitor the internal damage, crack type, fracture mode and other characteristics of a steel slag permeable asphalt mixture under compression and splitting [17][18][19][20].…”
