Fracture Mechanism of Coal Seams Induced by a Multibranched Borehole Drilling (MBBD) Technique to Enhance Coalbed Methane (CBM) Extraction

Shan Huang,
Yiyu Lu,
Zhaolong Ge
et al.

Abstract: The multibranched borehole drilling (MBBD) method employs a self-propelled nozzle (SPN) to artificially create multiple branching boreholes (BBs), which induces fracturing of the coal seams and increases their permeability in order to strengthen the extraction of coal seam gas in underground mines. This novel technology for enhancing coal seam permeability has gradually been applied in China, and there have been promising results. To improve our understanding of the drilling-induced fracture distribution patte… Show more

“…Ge et al 38 conducted water jet rock fragmentation experiments under true triaxial conditions and established rock damage energy criteria. Huang et al 39 found that the stress difference significantly affects the crack density and crack generation efficiency. Li et al 40 analyzed the mechanism of wax clogging in the process of moving the pipe cleaner in front of the wax plug and in the process of not cleaning.…”

“…In-seam drilling is often adopted for gas pre-drainage in coal and gas outburst mines [1][2][3][4]. Because hydraulic slag removal is used in wet drilling, soft coal absorbs water and expands, causing drill holes to collapse [5][6][7][8] and reducing the penetration rate.…”
