Fracture Toughness of 2‐D Woven SiC/SiC CVI‐Composites with Multilayered Interphases

Abstract: Relations between fracture toughness and fiber/matrix interphases were examined on various SiC/SiC composites made by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and reinforced with woven fiber bundles. Strong and weak fiber/matrix bondings were obtained using multilayered interphases consisting of various combinations of carbon and SiC layers of different thickness and using fibers which had been previously treated. Fracture toughness was estimated using the J‐ integral and using strain energy release rate computed wit… Show more

“…. For instance, high tensile strengths (up to 400 MPa) can be obtained with Hi-Nicalon TM SiC fibers [19], or with rather strong interfaces [17,20]. Larger strains-tofailure (up to 1%) can also be observed [20].…”

“…9,10) A 2D-Nicalon/SiC composites with multilayered PyC-SiC interlayers have been fabricated and studied. 10,11) Also, Hi-Nicalon TM /SiC minicomposites with nanoscale (PyC-SiC) n interlayers have been developed. 12) One of the main advantages of the multilayers in SiC/SiC composites is the possibility to provide much complex interfacial cracking mechanisms and thus, to improve the materials performance.…”

“…There are different methods for calculating the critical Jintegral value, J IC , (58,(87)(88). The majority of them are based on the calculation of the energy absorbed by pre-cracked specimens, determined on the basis of the area under the load -crack opening displacement curves (87).…”
