Fragility Hip Fractures in Elderly Patients in Bhubaneswar, India (2012-2014)

Abstract: Elderly patients with hip fracture constitute Single Largest Group of Emergency Orthopaedics Admissions. In 2050, 6.26 million hip fractures worldwide, approximately 50%, will occur in Asia. Only small number of reports on incidence of hip fractures in the Asian population exist. India lacks data registry for fragility hip fractures, therefore, the magnitude and standard of patient care are not known. A prospective multicenter study was conducted from January 2012 to April 2014 to describe population-based lon… Show more

“…6 – 8 Few studies elicit the problem of hip fractures in India, highlighting the clinical and socioeconomic challenges in the management of hip fractures. 20 , 21 On admission, the prime target would be to optimize the patient for surgery, needing the care of an orthogeriatric team, as rightly highlighted by Lau et al, Jain et al, and Rocca et al 20 , 22 , 23 Identifying the key elements in this orthogeriatic assessment is of vital importance to provide a targeted approach for individual patient, as highlighted by popular established guidelines. 6 – 8 , 24 Our search of literature showed that controversy exists in deciding between HHA and THA when considering patient’s age, with evidence supporting both.…”

“…With the global aging of population, the proportion of the elderly has been increasing, and the incidence of femoral neck fractures is also rising as expected [4][5][6]. It is estimated that the number of patients with hip fractures will be up to approximately 6 million in the world by 2050 [7]. With the improvement of medical technology, the development of built-in materials and the progress in surgical techniques, the surgical treatment for femoral neck fractures has been widely recognized.…”

“…The main reason is osteoporosis, which is characterized by low bone mass and destruction of the bone microarchitecture, resulting in increased fragility [1]. Hip fracture in elderly patients is a kind of osteoporotic fractures, which is becoming a healthcare problem with the increase of fracture incidence owing to the increasing aged population [2,3]. Therefore, it is of great concern to investigate predictors for the occurrence of hip fractures.…”
