PurposeEffective educational methods are critical for successfully training future supply chain talent. The paper proposes a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making model to evaluate and select the best educational method for tomorrow's supply chain leaders integrating skill development priorities in an uncertain environment.Design/methodology/approachThe Grounded theory scheme is used to identify SC leaders' skillsets criteria and educational method alternatives. Fuzzy step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis sets the priority and determines the weight of 17 criteria. Eight decision-makers evaluate 13 alternatives using fuzzy linguistic terms. Fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution ranks and shows the most effective educational method. Sensitivity analysis presents the applicability of this study.FindingsIts implementation in a university-industry collaboration case in Brazil, Mentored learning from industry experts is the best educational method. The skill development priorities are data analytics ability, end-to-end supply chain vision and problem-solving. Technical skills are the most important criteria that influence the selection of the optimal option and educational methods related to learning from others rank in the top teaching pool, including multidisciplinary cross-cultural training.Originality/valueThis paper is among the first to evaluate educational methods with skill development priorities integration for supply chain students using fuzzy SWARA–fuzzy TOPSIS. It provides actionable insights: a decision-making procedure for educational method selection, a broad skills profile for supply chain professional success and educational methods that professors can bring to in classroom/virtual environment.

Our foremost purpose with this research is to specify a new method of freight optimization that shippers can utilize to satisfy their budget conditions while confronting the market’s necessities. This paper designs an optimization model for tactical planning that minimizes the cost of highway transportation operations. The findings and analysis of China and Pakistan’s shipping sectors shed light on the implications of cost trade-offs between multimodal and intermodal transportation. As this study is based on the ExWorks incoterms, we developed a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to formulate the cost-minimization problem, bearing in mind the internal cost constraints of transportation. The Pareto optimal solutions are generated by a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) in the MATLAB optimization solver with the support of the Pareto fitness function to balance the costs of multimodal and intermodal transportation in delivering 40 ft container units from China to Pakistan. The solution to the problem demonstrates that the cost of multimodal freight transportation is higher than that of intermodal freight transportation. However, significant changes occur when rail carrying capacity is increased. The cost of intermodal transportation for a 40 ft container from Shanghai, China, to Kasur, Pakistan, is 4712 USD, while multimodal transportation costs 7119 USD. Additionally, this study can be expanded by examining transit times associated with multimodal and intermodal freight distribution for imports and exports.

PurposeThe main purpose of this research is to investigate the supply chain performance through collaborative effectiveness, from the organisations of Asia–Pacific region perspective, compared with that of global organisations based on collaborative supply chain practices.Design/methodology/approachThe survey research methodology was adopted, involving the collection of survey data from 223 participants across 10 different industries and 6 geographic regions. Data included 103 organisations in the Asia–Pacific region including Australia, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.FindingsFrom a collaborative effectiveness perspective, the supply chain performance of Asia–Pacific organisations is different when compared with that of global organisations. It was also found that global organisations are driven by sales performance, while Asia–Pacific organisations are focussing mainly on the cost in terms of the number of employees, and therefore productivity. The metal industry stands out to be the best performing industry from a collaborative effectiveness perspective in the Asia–Pacific region and globally.Practical implicationsThe research findings can be used as a guide by industry practitioners to develop benchmarks for collaborative supply chain practices by industry and region of operations. This research has been limited to a few industries such as manufacturing, logistics, service and retail industries.Originality/valueThis research generates new knowledge on the relationship between the collaborative effectiveness and supply chain performance, from the perspectives of both Asia–Pacific and global organisations, based on a collaborative effectiveness framework. The study proposes an innovative approach of assessing supply chain performance through collaborative effectiveness from the perspectives of geographical boundaries and industry types.
