Frames at the Interface of Language and Cognition

Abstract: This article reviews the work on frames in the last decade by a Düsseldorf research group. The research is based on Barsalou's notion of frames and the hypothesis that the frame is the general format of categorization in human cognition. The Düsseldorf frame group developed formal definitions and interpretations of Barsalou frames and applied the theory in linguistics, philosophy, and psychology. This review focuses on applications of the theory in semantics. The Düsseldorf approach grounds the analysis of com… Show more

“… Purves et al, 2019 ). We achieve this result by extending our approach with a frame semantics analysis of facets and place concepts (e.g., Löbner, 2014 , 2021 ). We show that place names and terms (e.g., alley and street ) can enter hierarchical types of relations in conceptual networks.…”

“… Frame-theoretic representation for the “Pitt Street” concept. Note that concepts can undergo a form of compositional facet unification (“feature unification” in frame theories: Löbner, 2014 , 2021 ). The concept “Pitt” and the concept “Street” are represented via their structured facet referents, F and S .…”

“…The framing of an issue, whether it emphasizes gains or losses, significantly influences decision-making. The analysis of such framing effects is an empirical area of study that tries to understand the link between language use (how it is framed) and how it influences our thoughts, including attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors [8].…”

“…Barsalou posited that frames serve as the fundamental format for concepts in cognitive processes, a proposition that became known as the Frame Hypothesis that within human cognition, frames offer the basic means of representing information [8]. He substantiated this assertion with empirical evidence and incorporated it into a comprehensive theory of cognition.…”

“…In this direction, "the research group of Düsseldorf" has presented the history of frames in relation to linguistics and cognitive science. It has been found that semantics and commmon sense knowledge are essential to develop linguistic frame model that covers word claases in natural language (Löbner, 2021). Frame knowledge has also been applied to discuss metaphors and it accurately mapping the metaphors in English (Stickles et al, 2014).…”
