Framing design of reminiscence aids with transactive memory theory

Abstract: This work aims at designing reminiscence aids that help people remember meaningful events. With an epistemological stance of research through design, the framing of the Oblivescence Board was informed by theories in social psychology and psycholinguistics. We brought a neglected drawback (i.e. forgetting) of a transactive memory system to the center of a reminiscence dialogue, where an embodied negotiation of common grounds was constructed out of a visualization metaphor. The qualitative results from a field e… Show more

“…In recent decades, there has been increasing attention within the HCI community on designing technology to support and enhance people's reminiscence of their past life experiences [2,14,63,64,81,91]. Researchers and designers have created various technologybased reminiscence tools that utilize people's digital data, such as social media content [63], emails [32], and photos [2,20,64], as resources to stimulate their memories and aid in the process of reminiscing about the past.…”

“…In recent decades, HCI researchers have investigated the use of technology for supporting reminiscence [14,45,64,81,91], and different types of technology-based tools have been designed to enable people to re-experience their personal digital data like social media content [63], emails [32], photos [2,20,64], sound [37,42] and music [72], to trigger their memories. Moreover, several researchers have proposed AI-driven solutions like chatbots that aim to offer human-like and personalized interactions [15,28,58], for realizing the potential of AI technologies to aid the reminiscing process.…”

“…In our study, Slide2Remember provided participants with daily recall experiences by subtly exposing their past digital possessions. In this respect, one prior study [30] mentioned that it is necessary to interweave reminiscence activities into daily practice to help people recall memories. Additionally, there has been an attempt to deliver the necessary information to users through various ambient displays rather than directly alerting them [14,15].…”

“…Simultaneously, the abundance of easily captured digital media and the consequences of storing everything "just in case" have made it difcult for people to organize and retrieve those data [30]. David et al (2012) remarked that the exponential growth of digital photo collections has led families to experience difculties in remembering photos, thus showing a need to support serendipitous interaction methods of approaching personal media [37].…”
