“…Serotypes found among pneumococci in the nasopharynx include the most common serotypes that caused invasive disease in Paraguay in the years prior to vaccine introduction (2010–2012) [ 41 ]. In addition, in this study, strains with resistance to antimicrobials were found more frequently in serotypes included in PCV10.The data on isolates from nasopharyngeal colonization can provide relevant information on the potential burden of pneumococcal disease and are important for understanding circulation before vaccination programs are implemented as well as for evaluating the impact after vaccine introduction in the country.…”

“…For the three periods analysed were pre-vaccination (2006-2012), post-PCV10 (2013-2017) and post-PCV13 (2018-2020). A total of 885 S. pneumoniae isolates from cerebrospinal fluid (97), pleural fluid (263), blood (458) and bronchoalveolar lavage (57), as well as 278 PCR-positive/culture-negative clinical samples of cerebrospinal fluid (30), pleural fluid (241) and blood (7), were included.…”

“…Some serotypes included in PCV13 still remain a cause of IPD, in particular 19A and 3 [6]. Although penicillin has been the treatment of choice for pneumococcal infection for a long period of time, the increased incidence of pneumococcal strains resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics threatens the treatment of pneumococcal infections [7]. Serotypes 19A, 6A, 6B, 9V, 14, 15A, 19F and 23F have shown the greatest resistance to penicillin and erythromycin, and many of them are included in the vaccines [8].…”
